Inov-8 Stormshell Waterproof Jacket

Inov-8 Stormshell Waterproof Jacket

The Inov-8 Stormshell sits firmly in the β€œserious runner” categoryβ€”this isn’t a casual rain jacket, it’s a purpose-built piece of kit for trail runners, fell runners, and anyone training in harsh weather.

  • Weight: 172g
  • Waterproofing Level: 20,000 HH
  • Material 100% Recycled Nylon

The standout feature is its balance of waterproofing and breathability. With a 20,000mm hydrostatic head and similarly high breathability rating, it handles heavy rain exceptionally well without turning into a sweat box.

Field tests show it can withstand prolonged downpours with no leakage, even around seams and zips, while still venting heat during climbs.

In windy, exposed conditions, it performs just as wellβ€”the close fit and well-designed hood prevent flapping

At roughly 150–175g, the Stormshell is impressively light and packs down into its own pocket, making it ideal for races with mandatory kit requirements or long runs where space matters.

You can easily stash it in a running vest and forget it’s thereβ€”until you need it.

The fit is athletic and minimalist. It’s designed to sit close to the body, which improves performance in wind and rain but limits layering. Great for fast runs and races but not ideal if you want to wear bulky insulation underneath.

The soft Pertex Shield fabric also gives it a more comfortable feel than many crinkly waterproofs.

Benefits:

  • Adjustable hood with wired peak (stays put in wind)
  • Full-length zip for ventilation
  • Reflective details
  • Thumb loops and extended cuffs for extra coverage
  • Packs into chest pocket

Limitations:

  • Expensive for a lightweight shell
  • Limited layering space due to slim fit
  • Minimal insulationβ€”this is a shell, not a warm jacket
  • Some versions could use more reflective detailing

Final Thoughts

The Inov-8 Stormshell is one of the best ultralight waterproof running jackets available. It excels in harsh, wet conditions while remaining breathable enough for sustained effort.

Best for: trail runners, fell runners, race kit, fast hiking

Not ideal for: casual use, heavy layering, or cold static conditions

If you regularly run in bad weather and want something you can trust in the mountains, it’s a smart (if pricey) investment.
